Socio-Emotional Development
At STEP Charter, we are equally committed to each student’s social and emotional development.
We accomplish this by having:
- students continually coached and guided on how to be respectful, towards each other. Their interactions are closely monitored at all times in and outside of class.
- teachers and staff modeling for students how we want them to communicate with each other. Our teachers do not yell or demean students. We are always respectful, demonstrating to students that to get respect and cooperation from someone, you must give it first.
- informal and formal incentive programs in each classroom to encourage cooperation and group teamwork.
We believe that positive reinforcement or waiting for a better decision is the better way than punishment to strengthen a child’s social and emotional development and foster meaningful long-term behavior change.
